We're excited about this victory today; we think that, over time, it will be a life-saving victory. It's not the biggest settlement we've ever had in one of these cases, but we can talk about this one. In others there have been confidentiality requirements and we weren't able to talk to the press.

We should have a system of licensing and registration, we should treat firearms the same way that automobiles are treated so that people have to pass a safety test.

We have the right to defend ourselves against madmen with assault weapons. We have the right to defend ourselves against unrestricted gun sales to criminals or terrorists. And we're eventually going to win those rights. It's just a shame it's taking so long. Innocent people are dying every day while we wait for sanity in our gun laws.

We agree the laws on the books need to be aggressively enforced. The interesting thing is that most of those laws, he and his organization fought against. Now their answer is, Just enforce those laws and everything will be fine. I wish they had argued that when those laws were up.

Wayne LaPierre's legacy at the NRA has been to change the organization from one that historically was concerned with hunter safety, training and sportsmanship to one that is now a deep-pocketed, politically powerful machine - I say this reluctantly but it is a fact, representing the interests of criminals and terrorists.

Want to sell guns to any seedy character in the country? Call yourself a hobbyist. Rent a table at a gun show in Nevada. Sell all the non-banned semi-automatic rifles you want to anybody who comes along.

Want to arm your 13-year-old boy with a Bushmaster assault rifle, in case they get into a little trouble at school? Federal law says you can't give him a pistol, but you can give him a rifle.

They have some pretty tough gun laws in Japan, as they do in any other civilized country in the world, and they're not killing each other off with firearms. You have very violent films in Europe, yet it's not causing the mayhem we see in our streets routinely here.

There's a war going on in our country, a major battle between reasonable advocates of gun safety and the NRA, it is the battle to save the federal ban on assault weapons. The NRA has a lot more money and political power than we do. But we have the force of public opinion on our side.

There should be a background check every time a firearm is transferred. You shouldn't be able to go to a gun show and buy guns without a background check. There are Internet gun sales, classified ads in the newspapers - and you can buy guns without background checks.
